How Roof Insurance Claims Typically Work

An educational walkthrough: documentation, filing windows, the adjuster visit, deductibles, and what insurers decide.

The basic flow

  1. Document the damage. Photos of the roof, gutters, vents, and any interior stains, plus the storm date. A free inspection provides dated photos and a written assessment.
  2. Review your policy. Check your deductible and what perils your policy covers — wind and hail are covered under most standard homeowners policies, but terms vary.
  3. File promptly. Many policies limit how long after a storm you can file. Filing sooner keeps your options open.
  4. Adjuster visit. The insurer sends an adjuster to inspect and decide what the policy covers.
  5. Decision and repairs. If approved, the insurer pays for covered repair or replacement minus your deductible, and you choose the contractor.

Documentation that helps

Dated photos of damage, a written inspection report, the storm date, and records of any emergency repairs (like tarping) with receipts. Keep copies of everything you send and receive, and note the name of every person you speak with at the insurer.

Deductibles and timing

Your deductible is the part you pay out of pocket before coverage starts — it is set by your policy, not by the contractor. Claim windows also come from your policy: some allow months, others much less, so checking your policy early matters more than anything else in this process.

What insurers decide — and what they don't

The insurer decides whether damage is covered and how much the covered work costs. A contractor documents damage and performs the work; the contractor does not approve claims. If a claim is denied, your policy explains the appeal process — ask the insurer for the denial in writing and review it before deciding next steps.
